What is Bookmenti?

Bookmenti is a search engine for books mentioned in podcasts. When a host or a guest brings up a book, we find that moment, link it to the actual book, and let you listen to the exact seconds where it happens.

Podcasts are full of great book recommendations, but they fly by while you are driving, training, or doing the dishes. Bookmenti catches them for you, so a good recommendation is never lost again. The short version of why it exists is a personal one, and you can read it on who created Bookmenti.

How Bookmenti works

It starts with open podcast feeds

Podcasting still runs on an open standard. Nearly every show publishes a public RSS feed with its episodes and audio, regardless of which host it uses (Megaphone, Buzzsprout, Libsyn, and so on). That openness is one of the best things about the podcast world, and it is what makes Bookmenti possible. We pull new episodes for the shows in our network directly from those public feeds.

Every episode is transcribed, word by word

We built our own internal transcription pipeline, and it works at word level. Every single word gets its own timestamp. That precision is the whole point: it is what lets you jump to the exact moment a book comes up instead of scrubbing through a two hour episode.

A custom LLM layer hunts for book mentions

Between the transcripts and the platform sits a custom built LLM layer. It reads through each transcript and hunts for book mentions, including the casual ones where nobody says the word "book". It then matches what it found against real published books, with the right author and cover, and saves the quote around the mention so you can hear it in context.

It runs automatically, every day

The whole pipeline runs on its own every day. When a new episode of a tracked show comes out, we strive to have it transcribed and scanned for books as fast as possible. Charts, reading lists, and book pages rebuild themselves as new mentions flow in.

• Get an auto built reading list for each podcast in the network.
• Vote for podcasts that are not in the network yet. Those votes shape what we add next.

A growing network
